(More customer reviews)I bought this unit for my H&K P30L 9mm which has a standard MIL-STD (or picatinny) rail. The X5L is the universal model that will fit most standard/medium size guns (non-compact that is). Make sure you check the fit-chart on the Viridian website.
The X5L mounts and dismounts really easy; slide on, lock it with a bold and your good to go. The laser is extremely bright. I and I do mean extremely! During the day it is easily visible up to 10-25 feet (even in sunny conditions). During the night you can see it up to a mile (no kidding!). You can also see the beam itself in dark conditions. The tactical light is pretty bright too.
The unit has several settings for both the laser and the tactical light making it easy to adjust it to your needs. I tend to have it on slow pulsing laser (saves batteries) and I hardly use the tactical light because - believe it or not - the laser is so bright that it illuminates the area your pointing at almost by itself!
Having said that, you can understand this is not a tool that you can use inconspicuously (at all)! You will be exposed as the laser beam itself (unlike some red laser models) will show up rather easy. If you think about stealth use: don't!
If you take this to the range expect it to distract your fellow shooters! (Makes a good conversation piece though).
To zero-in the X5L you just use a small tool to adjust the windage an elevation. It took me less than a minute to do so. Very easy!
Now, on the more practical side: I like to wear tactical gloves and the buttons to operate on the unit (which by the way is ambidextrous) are a bit small. I have small hands myself so I have no trouble with them, but I can see how how people with bigger hands might have a problem. So the ergonomics are not super, just average.
The X5L fits nice and snug on my P30L and feels sturdy as it is made out of high strength Zytel polymer and aircraft aluminum.
Aside from the visibility issue (too be expected from a laser sight, so no issue for me), I have only two minor issues with the X5L:
- First battery life which less than 1hr when you use the tactical light and laser at the same time (with standard CR2 3V lithium battery).
- Second: the fact the X5L is not (or at least not advertised as) "all weather" or "water proof".
Given this, I have my doubts how this unit will hold up in the field in bad weather (i.e. rain, mud). Too me this is actually the only real "flaw" I can discover. For the money the X5L costs, Viridian should really have made it waterproof (or at least weather proof).
This is the only reason why I say it is an "almost" perfect combo.
My final rating (on a scale of 1-5) is as follow:
Design: 5
Ergonomics: 3,5
4-
Usage: 4,5
Overall rating: 4,25

P.s.: a little tip that saves ammo when you zero-in the laser: get a laser bore sight! That really works as a charm (SightMark Laser Bore Sights Cartridge Sizes: SightMark AccuDot Laser Bore Sight - 9mm Luger Model SM39015)
