GLOWSTICK BLU FLASHLITE (PPWGLOWSTICKB) Review

GLOWSTICK BLU FLASHLITE (PPWGLOWSTICKB)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this light at a popular Home Improvement Center for about $5 and will just touch on the points that made this light a great value for myself.
1 - It has a lanyard. This is great because my primary intent is to hang this light on my pack, and in my shelter.
2 - The shaft is hollow. This will allow the user to store small items such as dry tinder/Vaseline soaked cotton balls in protective baggie. Or what I have done is put my fire steel in it, with cotton balls to also keep it from rattling. This may not fit your fire steel if it has a grip. I purchased multiple bare fire steels from firesteeldotcom and they are a wonderful value too. You can also fit spare batteries for the light, and maybe some AA or AAA's in there too. Also remember when you use this space it will diminish the light output in the shaft if not completely smothering it. On that note, it is possible to reverse the light so that the colored side shines through the front, and the white light shines down the shaft. This is good if you want a covert light illuminating out of the front. When I did this, there was noticeable friction when I inserted it backwards, and I needed to use my pliers carefully on the white led to extract it. I'm not going to use it this way, but if I did I would sand down whatever piece of plastic was giving it friction.
3 - It is light weight. This may not be an issue for most. But if you are a backpacker on extended trips, then you know exactly how every ounce is going to add up, burning unnecessary calories along the trail.
My only complaint is the that it has a whistle. I would have preferred to have that space as more storage.
Gear can be expensive these days and it is refreshing to see a useful product at a very affordable price. I must note that this is my backup. I did spend some cashola on my primary, but that's not to say that this won't last in the years to come just because it's $5 and plastic. Time will tell. Thanks for reading.
PS: It takes 3x AG-13 batteries in case you were wondering.

Marpac Armband Safety Lite - Safety Light Review

Marpac Armband Safety Lite - Safety Light
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this armband because by the time I got home from work, the sun was already setting or had set for the evening. I enjoy running outside, but felt it was unsafe without a light and I refused to wear a headlamp! The armband lights up red and you can choose whether you want it to blink or not ( I choose not to have it blink usually). It lights up well, and is perfect for cars to see you when you run. The only flaw is that the button to turn on the light can be a little temperamental. Sometimes when I push it, the lights will come on for a second and then shut off. So I end up having to push it many times before it actually stays on and works. Other times the light will work right away.

Planet Bike Blinky Safety 1-Led Bicycle Light Set Review

Planet Bike Blinky Safety 1-Led Bicycle Light Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These lights work well, seem to be sturdy in construction and one battery seems to last quite a while. I'm very pleased with them but I couldn't give them 5 stars due to the design of the white light.
I had been using them for about a week and had to take an extra early ride in to work. It was my first when it was dark out. When I turned on the white light on the handlebars it shone in a wide arc, over 180 degrees up and down and left and right. I couldn't see because the light was shinning in my face as well as everywhere else.
A piece of black tape on the top part of the light and I was soon on my way. An easy fix to this if it happens to you.
Still riding with it and it is still working well. It's getting a bit darker every morning this time of year.
As other have noted this light shouldn't be counted on to light your way in the dark (I usually ride on lighted streets) but it will make you much more visible to others on the road.

About Planet Bike In November of 1996, Planet Bike was founded in Madison, Wisconsin. In many ways, Planet Bike began as a social experiment that dedicated itself to doing business in a different way. Instead of being just another company that develops and sells products with profit as its end goal, Planet Bike wanted to help bring about positive change for people, their communities, and the environment.
Despite being a simple machine, the people at Planet Bike have always believed that the bicycle has great potential to help improve the world and the lives of the people in it. From the start, they have embraced an alternative corporate purpose which seeks to help get more people on bicycles by making communities friendlier places for the self-propelled. By donating 25% of company profits to causes that promote and facilitate bicycle usage, Planet Bike hopes to make an impact.
Social experiments aside, Planet Bike was born from the heart of a cyclist with a goal of making innovative, high quality, and practical bicycle accessories. Simply put, they strive to design and develop the best bicycle products in the world. In the company's short ten year history, they have made important product innovations within the bicycle industry. Advancements include the 4-line computer which is now a standard in the industry and the world's first self-contained HID light. Not bad for a company that ten years ago started as a one man operation. Today, while still a small company, Planet Bike continues to evolve and improve their product line with the goal of always striving to build accessories that make it easier for people to ride their bikes. Since 1996, Planet Bike's financial support of the grassroots bicycle movement has totaled $500,000. By 2010, they have made a goal to donate $1 million to organizations that are dedicated to making America a friendlier place for cyclists.

My 5 year old loves it because now he sounds like daddy. I had one as a child and was certain he would enjoy it as much as I did. He left his bike out in the rain approx. 4 times in one month but the siren still works great. I will buy another when he finally succeeded in breaking it.

Mission Ready Quick Release Bike Light Review

Mission Ready Quick Release Bike Light
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I ordered this light, it arrived fully assembled, including the mount. It is basically an egg-shaped and sized, self-contained-generator powered, LED light. A water resistant switch cycles through 1 LED on, 3 LEDs on, 3 LEDs Strobe, OFF and the package claims 1 minute cranking can result in 40 minutes of "light" (I assume for sufficiently small volumes of light), and it may be true, but I doubt that it will run for 40 minutes at the 3 LED on position. 3 LED Strobe maybe, or 1 LED on. might be.
I unscrewed the compression lever to clamp the mount to the handle bar, and found it would not clamp with any of the rubber strips in place to make the mount secure, so I mounted it on the front/Center of my forward rack, where it seems to do very well, No tools required, with the clamp open, you simply unscrew the long screw, open the clamp up (plastic, flexible) and closing it as tight as possible, reinsert the screw/clamp assembly. Use the leverage provided by the clamp arm to rotate it. When the clamp reached the limit of closure, begin to rotate it to the closed position, and Bob's your Uncle.
No batteries are needed, or provided. The three LEDs are about as bright as the 3 LED cap lights, or the generic LED 3 battery lights. Nothing special, but for a little bit of work you can reliably get home at 5 pm, in the dark. Not a bad deal, the light is cheaper than the top-grade tail lights, like the RADbot 1000, or the Blackburn Mars 5.0.
The crank folds compactly into the egg shape, and the light mounts to the mount by sliding the light into the mount. Friction appears to hold it rather firmly, so be aware when it come to removing it, it may require some force. Did not seem to hurt it any.
Plastic, coated with rubber, to make it function in the rain, which I have not tested.
This light seems custom made for Mormon (LDS Church) Missionaries, you see riding about in black slacks and white shirts on the their bicycles, which would square well with the name of the light and the place of its manufacture (Logan, UT). Low cost, around $19, makes it a frugal choice, too.
Update: The light LASTS as long as it says it will, it just DOESN'T ILLUMINATE anything. Soon after you quit cranking, much less than 10 minutes, the light is already so dim you could not use it to read a randomly selected menu.
Yes, the LEDs are still on, but NOT working very hard. I'd rather buy a few batteries and use my Single AA battery penlight. So, I think I'll leave this one at home. TTo STARs, THREE MAX, mostly for build quality, and novelty. Maybe a group of Spelunkers could use it to explore a cave where ANY light to see by helps, but they can crank it a few more turns in a second to get more light. Riding on a bicycle, this light is more a liability than an asset.
I think I'll buy a 700 lumen LED light to light my way on the bike.

Standard Horizon STD-HX471S Handheld Marine VHF Radio (Silver) Review

Standard Horizon STD-HX471S Handheld Marine VHF Radio (Silver)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Very good VHF. The sound is great, simple operation, but doesn't have a basic battery charge indicator. I didn't use yet up to the total discharge of the battery, and don't know if it has any notice about charging need.

Keep on top of emergencies, stay in touch with other boaters, and even listen to your favorite AM and FM radio stations with the Standard Horizon STD-HX471SS handheld two-way VHF radio. Specifically designed for marine use, the HX471SS is factory programmed with all U.S., Canadian, and international marine channels, letting you communicate easily with other ocean-going vessels. At the same time, the radio receives a host of weather channels from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), so you can learn about approaching storms or hurricanes well before they hit. And should you want to call your friends or family on shore or sing along to your favorite station, the HX471SS can handle that, too. The radio's Family Radio Service (FRS) band accommodates your ship-to-shore communications, while the AM, FM, and aeronautical bands give you a ton of listening options. Simply put, the HX471SS lets you monitor a range of frequencies previously unavailable in any portable marine VHF radio.
As with any well-built marine radio, the HX471SS is rugged and fully waterproof, with a high-impact, non-corrosive, silver die-cast chassis that can withstand a high degree of physical abuse while also standing up to submersion in 1 meter of water for 30 minutes. Want a submersible radio to take hiking, skiing, hunting, or caravanning? Look no further. It's also a breeze to browse through the channels using the scan function either without priority (starting from lowest to highest) or while monitoring emergency channels. And should you want to scan between a VHF marine channel and a FRS channel, simply activate the Dual Watch function. Other operational details include an NOAA weather alert function that notifies you of impending severe weather, a Preset key that lets you store up to 10 channels for each band, and a high-intensity strobe light that emits the internally recognized S.O.S. signal during emergencies--a must for any boater. The S.O.S. beacon can be seen from up to 1 mile away.
Another nice feature is the NMEA charging cradle that lets you connect the radio to a GPS. Once connected, the radio stores your GPS location in its memory, and then notifies the Coast Guard or other emergency service should an accident occur. In the event of a distress, simply grab the HX471SS, lift the Distress cover, and depress the Distress key for three seconds. The radio will then transmit a distress call with your position while simultaneously activating the strobe light.
Packaged with a 1,300 mAh lithium-ion battery, HX471SS delivers 10 to 12 hours of operation on a single charge. Plus, the battery is guaranteed never to develop a "memory" that inhibits its ability to work for a full day. To charge, simply attach either the AC or 12-volt DC cable to the charging cradle and you're set (charging time is roughly three hours).
The radio, which also comes with a quick-draw belt clip, measures 2.36 by 3.78 by 1.12 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a three-year warranty.
What's in the Box Handheld marine VHF radio, rechargeable battery, AC charger, 12-volt DC charger with cigarette lighter plug, charging cradle, user's manual.

Kid Switch Decora Switch Adapter Review

Kid Switch Decora Switch Adapter
Average Reviews:

My daughter absolutely loves being able to turn her light switch on and off. I was debating between 3 and 4 stars because she loves it and because it does work for now. I just don't think it's going to last very long. The design does not lie squarely on our Decora style switch and it's attached just by sticky tape. I think it's going to come off in the near future with all the use she gives it. It also does not work as smoothly as the original kidswitch so she has to play with it quite a bit to get it to stay on (she's 18 months and it would probably work more easily for an older toddler). However, it appears to be the only option out there and we will probably be able to repair it when that happens by buying more sticky tape.

Tactical Pistol Compact Red Laser with QD Quick Release Flash Light Compatible with M1913 weaver rail Review

Tactical Pistol Compact Red Laser with QD Quick Release Flash Light Compatible with M1913 weaver rail
Average Reviews:

I wanted to find a good laser attachment for my .40 S&W Px4, thus I scoured the internet for something under $100. Stumbled upon this after two days of searching and finally decided to buy the set.
You get both laser and light with their respective batteries. The previous reviewer states that the batteries are uncommon and such, which became one of my deciding factors, until I found that they were actually fairly cheap if you know where to look in the internet.
The quality of the laser/light is great. They don't feel cheaply made and fit together tightly. You could always remove the laser and just use the light. There was a very, very slight jiggling after I mounted the set, but that could easily be remedied.
Windage and elevation are adjusted by set screws that I felt were a bit lose, but I'll tighten them with teflon tape later. The recoil screw can be taped as well.
Overall, I love this set. The set matched my Px4 perfectly and gave it the military tactical look I was hoping for, at a low cost compared to the named brands. I haven't range tested how the set would take recoil yet, but I'll update soon.
UPDATE:
Shot 150 .40 rounds and the laser barely moved. Highly recommend. Revised to a 5 star

Nirve Tiki Ornament Bike Light Review

Nirve Tiki Ornament Bike Light
Average Reviews:

It's great fun for the price, it looks marevelously wacky on a bicycle, and provides a minimal amount of increased night time visibility. On the other hand, it's pretty cheaply made, and I gave up after too much time spent on trying to attach it to the handle bars with the mounting equipment that's included. It might mount easily to an old fashioned bicycle front wheel fender, but if I had a vintage bike like that, I wouldn't mar it with extra holes. I ended up attaching it to the rear bike rack using duct tape, and that actually makes it more amusing.

TechLite Lumen Master High-Intensity Tactical LED Flashlight 3-Pack Review

TechLite Lumen Master High-Intensity Tactical LED Flashlight 3-Pack

Very bright flashlight, projects its beam far, but short battery life. When the red light in the pushbutton switch comes on indicating 20% battery life left the light stops working - only the red "low battery" light continues to work. The rubber o-ring water seals are weak and stretch out of place when replacing the cap after putting in new batteries. After the second battery replacement, one of my flashlights quit working - only the low-battery indicator came on, even with fresh full-charge batteries in the flashlight.
I liked how bright this flashlight was when it worked, but it used batteries fast and it didn't work long.

The whistle is ear spitting LOUD if you blow hard enough in it. I had assumed that the light was going to be larger than it was, but it is very bright.
Flip the battery to change modes probably would be difficult on the water, but I think most times, one mode would suit a specific need.

Blackburn Quadrant Mars 3.0 Light Combo Review

Blackburn Quadrant Mars 3.0 Light Combo
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
At first I was hesitant to get a battery powered headlight and taillight, but after I installed it (with ease), I LOVED IT!! The LED headlight is very bright and the LED taillight is virtually impossible to miss (I think it is as prominent as some motorcycle taillights). The ability to flash each light and the taillight also having orange lights on the side makes it even more visible. Mounting the lights on my bike only took 15 minutes and only the taillight needed for me to use a screwdriver (to tighten and tweak the angle). The LEDs are really great and so far after using it for over 4 hours, I see no fade in the light power. The headlight has four LEDs with 3 modes (4 steady, 2 blink 2 steady, and 4 blinking (which looks like a strobe light)) and the rear also has 3 modes (steady, steady blinking, and random blinking). Be aware that you will need a jewelers screwdriver to open the rear taillight to install the batteries. Each of the lights detaches from the bike mounts and allow you to use them when camping or to clip on the taillight to your bookbag or clothing for visibility when walking along a highway or where cars are present, and the headlight can be used as a nice flashlight. The only thing I have to say is that you still need to look out for cab drivers in the Big Apple, since they can't stand that your lights are brighter than theirs and seem drawn to bikers while driving. Get this light, you won't regret it, I sure didn't. :-)

Black Diamond Equipment Spot Headlamp Review

Black Diamond Equipment Spot Headlamp
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been an owner of this spot lamp's predecessor for several years. You could call this headlamp the same thing, but there are several innovations that make this leaps and bounds above any other model I've used!
This headlamp is light, and very bright! I chose one in the covert green as it matches my hunting gear well. The main selling point on this model, and which caused me to upgrade, was the red LED's. My last hunting trip was a night hunt, and a friend of mine had a red LED headlamp as well (though a different brand). When he was able to switch on the red light, it did not destroy my night vision which had been adjusting over 30 minutes. The downside to his light was that it would cycle through regular to red, defeating the purpose of the red LEDS, ruining my night vision, and scaring potential game. This model can permanently switch to red without having to cycle through white. Holding down the button for 3 seconds will make the switch so that each time you press the button it will turn it from off to on, all the while remaining in red mode. To switch it back to normal, hold for another 3 seconds... brilliant.
While in the normal LED mode, it has two settings. The central brightest LED, and the secondary dimmer LED's. Both can be dimmed intuitively with a little practice. While in either mode, hold the power button and it will dim slowly like moving dimmer switch. Just release when it reaches the desired level. This works the opposite way for brightening too.
The strobe function can be achieved by using similar switch combinations. The lockout feature is a huge plus. Several times my old model had switched on in my cargo pocket, or in my pack. Holding the switch for 6 seconds will lock the unit out unless you hold it for another 6 seconds (it will let you know by flashing blue on the indicator light). I haven't tested the low battery indicator, but no doubt it works just as great.
This is by no means a detraction against the rating of this model, but the functions have a bit of a learning curve... read the quick start guide! I was a bit overwhelmed by something that you would think would be very simple, but this thing has an impressive amount of functionality achieved through ONE switch! Once you learn how to use it, it's very intuitive.
As a testament to its reliability, I've owned the previous model for around 4 years. It's been through dozens of camping trips, a lot work around the house, car work, and misc fun! It's not a main flashlight replacement, but meant to be a great light for tasks you'll need in most situations (all the while keeping your hands free). This is the best and smartest on the market, and for the price... don't hesitate and buy it.
